Full Version: Seeing prominent editors in person?

I've been bouncing this off a few people in private, but in the interest of a quicker response I decided to post here. I'm wondering if anything could be done should one see a major WP editor in person?

As in, you've talked about him/her here.

No, I would simply be polite and go about whatever matter that brought us together without even mentioning Wikipedia. If it were someone very prominent and public, like Mr. Wales, I might say something like "Oh yes, I've heard of Wikipedia" to not be rude. This is pretty much the same approach as I would take with a prominent person who I politically oppose.

I don't think the kind of conversation that would be appropriate in such casual encounters would offer any possibility of persuasion. Not engaging them would be consistent with my choice to pursue criticism of WP pseudonymously and would avoid the possibility of making them uncomfortable, which may be characterized as "stalking" them.

WR provides a sufficient forum to voice criticism of WP.

I think this is no different than if you met Tom Cruise in person.

You would say, or I would say, "Oh wow, I really thought you were funny in Risky Business".

Ha Ha. Well those 50,000 vandal patrol edits aren't made at the gym on a stair climbing machine, are they?

Considering that your "Average Wiki admin/biological vandelbot" spend better than
18/7/365 on the Wild World of Wiki, this video simulation may not be to far from
the truth!!!

What Wiki world of Weirdness.

Well I might as well say this if it wasn't already glaringly obvious: I have, indeed, seen an administrator in public.

Because s/he might be reading this - I know all too well that several of them do come here - I won't discuss much about him. A few people here know who it is, though.

Nevertheless, I can say that my intrigue into this situation has piqued considerably.

This was already addressed in a prior thread. I recommend these items:

*baseball bat
*ether and a cloth to put ether in
*several rolls of duct tape
*car with trunk

So, to be clear... you advocate violence against others based on the possibility that they may be (there's always a margin of error, of course) an editor or admin of a wiki that you dislike?

Worst case scenario, such as Seigenthaler, where he was actively maligned by a twit... you sue them. I just fail to understand why you'd even jokingly advocate harming someone.

Despite the impression some may give here, no one's advocating violence or anything illegal in regards to Wikipedians, WP, or the Wikimedia Foundation. I'd hate the human race to be declared an Attack Site on WP.

What if you seriously advocate harming someone, within an encyclopedia? What if you recommend that overzealous advertisers not go so far as to gut themselves?

To return to the initial question "what do you do when you meet a prominent WP editor in person", you do what you do when you meet any cult member.

You avoid the issue. You don't confront them. If they insist on talking about it, you ask polite questions and make polite answers, and then you sidestep. You should not confront them directly.

Why? Because they're not ready to hear it and if you say anything "negative", you'll be branded one of the "people against THE PROJECT". And you will be attacked.

I know someone who has confronted these people in person (including those at the very top) and they are always getting their computer attacked and even hacked, receiving threatening letters and telephone calls and even visits to their office.. Better to avoid that kind of thing, and try to solve the problem outside of their alternative view of reality.

This is what you should do: Tell them you're me (JB196) or Willy on Wheels or (my personal favorite) mr oompapa or somebody who is controversial. (and then fill me in on their reaction)

Try Andrew Morrow.

Or maybe wear an Encyclopedia Dramatica t-shirt.
