Boba Phat. Enough said.
Somey
Where do you find this stuff?

A quick check of the article history reveals that this highly informative little gem was created by SheighZam (T-H-L-K-D), who is also the primary contributor to the article Miss Clit (T-H-L-K-D), which is about a woman named Shannon Thier, aka... wait for it... "Sheigh Zam." rolleyes.gif

Apparently, Ms. Zam's claim to fame is her real-life and stage role as secretary to Blowfly (artist) (T-H-L-K-D), a comedy rapper. This might suggest that "Boba Phat" and Mr. Blowfly are the same person, and that the costumed Tusken Raider in this photo is Ms. Zam herself.

I have a network of friends who think nothing more or less of Wikipedia than it's a web-based encyclopedia that is culturally funny and useful, but that you can't trust everything in it.

One of these friends forwarded it to me, literally saying, "I'm doing this for Halloween, except I'm going to add a giant afro." (He's African-American.)

Not "encyclopedic" enough........

Somey, do you realize how silly it is to call Blowfly "a comedy rapper"?
He invented rap. And named it.
QUOTE
Reid started off writing songs for artists including Betty Wright, Sam & Dave, Gwen McCrae and KC & the Sunshine Band. He also recorded a few hits of his own in the '60s including "Nobody But You Babe" under his real name and a Blowfly song called "Rap Dirty" in 1965. Many hip hop fans consider "Rap Dirty" as the first rap song because in he talks in rhyme and it has rap (slang for talk) in the title.

Good research skills there, Einstien. Yes, I am Shannon Thier, aka Sheigh Zam. I am a singer with Blowfly, who is NOT a comedy rapper, as stated above but the actual inventor of rap music. And no, Blowfly is NOT Boba Phat. Blowfly is 70 years old and is hardly walking around at comic conventions. And yes, I am the Tusken Raver in the pic (no hiding that, it states it clearly under the pic), but make no claim of notoriety for myself, as I have little recognition as anything but SheighZam/Miss Clit, performer with Blowfly.

Yes, I made the Miss Clit wiki as I am notable, however decided on redirect to Blowfly because, in all honesty despite my close work with Blowfly ( and thank you EricBarbour for clarifying Blowfly's enormous place in history of an entire genre of music), I am personally not THAT notable.

Boba Phat, however IS notable, and has a HUGE following among the comic, cosplay & Star Wars scene. He is featured in 2 documentaries, 3 print publications, countless online mentions - from "normies", celebs & highly reputable news sources. And he did not write or have anything to do with the wiki that was created for him. Due to my background (again, if you know anything about rap, you will know that funk legend Rudy Ray Moore was known as Dolemite) therefore the connection between my being who I am and having an association with underground icon Boba Phat is no coincidence.

Regardless, his notability IS evident, and several publications will be released in upcoming months which feature him as the main source for interview. He created a clever character - and while I am sure there are many who are impressed enough with his ingenuity to copy his concept as a Halloween costume (with an afro! - saw that Twitter post, BTW - funny stuff), there is one & only Boba Phat.

Contact the following celebrities should you want validity on his recognition: Seth Green, Jane Wiedlin, J. Scott Campbell, Kristen Bell, Anthony Michael Hall, Craig Ferguson, Michael Dougherty - director of 'Trick 'r Treat', who personally awarded Boba Phat 2nd place (sympathy vote for 1st was for some little 4 year old) for "best cosplayer" at Long beach Comic Con, Casey Pugh (inventor of Vimeo.com), the editors/writers at StarWarsBlog.com as well as Star Wars Insider Magazine ....I could add more, but you get my point.

Paris Hilton was famous for being the rich heiress & doing nothing at one point. At least Boba Phat has single-handedly created an identity that has not only caused him to become a recognizable fixture on the cosplay circuit, but also a character that clearly people want to emulate (albeit with an afro - please let me know how that works out through the Boba Fett helmet, by the way. Funny stuff!!)

Additionally go to BobaPhat.com which redirects to his freshly made Facebook fan page, and click on both his media mentions as well as documentary & video appearances for further validation. There is too much (MUCH more than a mere 23 "encyclopedic" references to add into Wikipedia).

Very Best,
Shannon aka Sheigh Zam aka Miss Clit....aka Tusken Raver

Well, whatever happens through the respective "Article for Deletion" debates (where Miss Clit commits the cardinal sin of over-defending an article she wrote -- power-user's tip: if you want an article you created kept on Wikipedia, beg for its removal), these articles will be preserved at Wikipedia Review.com:

What is the world coming to when someone who was "2nd place for "best cosplayer" at Long beach Comic Con" has to prove that they are worthy of mention in WP?

SheighZam, I think you need to get Jimbo personally involved in this one. He is, at heart, a lonely lonely geek and would understand fully.

Nah, not so worried about the over-defense - it was redirected to Blowfly on the Wiki, and if it happens to be up on Wikipedia Review, so be it. Hey, I DID perform with the biggest rap star ever - I'm proud of that even if I look like a "slut" - hey 34 isn't so bad for looking as well as I do(!) But thanks for the info.

As far as Boba Phat, he is WELL DESERVING of his notoriety. I was being facetious mentioning the 2nd place win. Who wouldn't give a nerdy kid in a really horrible Spiderman suit prize number 1 in a contest? That's just polite. By audience participation, Boba Phat was the CLEAR winner. BTW, who is Jimbo? I'm new to all of this.

What I CAN say is this:

Boba Phat has been referenced in the following media:

Sign On San Diego, LA Weekly, LB Post, Seattle PI, Fox 5, Star Wars Blog, Crashing the Con documentary, The Daily Titan, Metromix, Vuze, Pixelgeek, Comic Book Movie, 562 City Life, The Craig Ferguson Show, CBS4, MTV, Gawker, etc.; these are all references with direct mentions &/or photos of to Boba Phat/Pimp Boba. While there are a whole slew of FLICKR, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter & MySpace sources which are questionable, a great number of them are attributed to celebrities and are are valid - for instance The Go-Go's Jane Wiedlin posting how excited SHE was to get a picture with the "famous Boba Phat" & even posting that statement as well as her photos of & with him on her Twitpic site; J. Scott Campbell (extremely famous Marvel artist) expressing on his Facebook site how Boba Phat is by far his favorite cosplayer (of which I can provide screen shot if need be); even Seth Green's literally LEAPING over his signing table (no joke) at last year's San Diego Comic Con for the chance to take a pic with Boba Phat as he passed by. Now the last incident is not documented in media (although I do have a photo from online that was taken of that incident) but its validity was witnessed by hundreds; as well as photos taken of Boba Phat with the 2 co-producers & #1 winners of the George Lucas Audience Choice Fan Film award "Saber!" from the 2009 San Diego Comic Con, who REQUESTED to be photographed with HIM. Additionally Anthony Michael Hall stopped mid-conversation to insist on taking a photo of Boba Phat at the Long Beach Convention on October 2nd, 2009, as Boba Phat passed by his booth (I have a photo of that as well, however Anthony Michael Hall is in possession of the one he personally took).

So, there's a big case for notoriety, and as his popularity expands, there will be more to come...

Look, I'm sorry I referred to Mr. Blowfly as a "comedy rapper." I should have researched that a little more, but I'm totally not into that particular genre. In fact, it depresses me...

Frankly, if you really care about Mr. Blowfly, you should probably try to change the article about him so that it doesn't contain the words "suck my dick" in the introductory paragraph. It may be true, but it tends to belittle him in terms of historical and cultural respectability. It's not quite as bad as their inserting Nazi propaganda into the Martin Luther article (and fighting tooth and nail to keep it there), but you just have to bear in mind that this is what Wikiipedia does, and it should never go unchallenged. It' quite possible they'd eventually have done it to you, too. ermm.gif

Hahaha! I had nothing to do with the Blowfly article. That was WAY before my time on Wiki, and unfortunately (but yet fortunately too) Blowfly is KNOWN as the original nasty rapper. Hey, can't change the song titles. Out of my powers, plus his controversy is what made him so popular among his genre.

LOL re: spelling Einstein wrong. Thanks for the correction, that's some irony right there... What can I say, I was tired of typing all night, although you'd think I'd get that right, seeing as how I'm Jewish....

Mr. Lar doesn't seem to think your participation here is, shall we say, "constructive" - "WHBT" means "We Have Been Trolled." The rest is "Hope This Helps" and "Have A Nice Day."

Earlier, Ms. Martin used the less-common acronym "YAIM," which I believe means "Yet Another Installation Method."

I should point out that WR is usually not the best place to discuss strategies for getting articles about specific pop-culture figures into Wikipedia, irrespective of their "notability" or marginality (whatever those terms mean this week). However, it probably is the best place for discussing strategies for getting such articles out of Wikipedia, so it would be unsportsmanlike conduct for us to refuse you the right to defend such articles, given that they're about you or people you know. And frankly, I don't believe articles like the one on Boba Phat do any harm - after all, pop-culture trivia is Wikipedia's "strong suit," and you should always play to your strengths...

The purpose of threads like this is simply to point out that Wikipedia's approach to inclusion vs. non-inclusion is often silly, not to mention completely non-academic. It's nothing personal, I can assure you! smile.gif

Interesting. because it was one of the Wiki editors who directed me here. I'm hardly a troll. Obviously a confused person trying to figure out why Wikipedia is harder than my law school classes were. I dunno. I'm not giving up the fight on the Boba Phat article. 7 out of the top 10 organic links on Google, you've gotta be kidding me if his notoriety is in question. Thanks for the clarification though. And then if Mr. Lar doesn't find my participation constructive, he can do exactly what Blowfly suggests and suck my.... nice day.

As far as what YAIM means, I have no respect for any idiot names herself after a character from a defunct early 90's sh*tty sitcom, although if you're the REAL Kelly Martin happy birthday 2 days early - and it'd be nice to see you do something besides the voiceover for Scooby Doo from 2002.

And I will check my personal msgs now... curious. Penetrating humor sounds dirty and fun! Thanks Somey & TheKohser for being kind to the newbie.

No FT-2. I fact, I dunno if you mean a camera, transistor, gun or golf thing, but the only thing he's packing is a collection of about 30,000 vinyl records in a storage unit, & a juice box he can drink with a straw through the helmet.

Actually according to the WMF's legal counsel, costume play does not fall into this category.

I can't comment on the legal basis for this but the position of commons image policy is that Marvel Comics would hold no third-party rights to a photo of a person thusly dressed. It would not matter whether they are an actor on a movie set or a kid at a halloween party, etc. This one was deemed public domain as it was taken by active duty Air Force.

Not the same Boba Phat. The Formula featured some fat guy named "Boba Fatt" (if you IMDB it you'll see). Boba Phat is far from disturbing, in fact he's quite comical & is always a blast to be around at SW events. He wears a blue polyester suit, ascot & 70's shirt - not an undershirt at all. Also, he doesn't drink a beer, he carries a wine or brandy goblet with some mysterious liquid, but it's definitely not beer.

The real Boba Phat IS, however, featured in "Crashing the Con" a documentary about San Diego Comic Con 2008, and will be in an official Lucasfilm's upcoming film about SW fans.
