As part of a class competition in SEO, we made a game in order to attract visitors to our site. The game is Wikimaniac - identifying the Wikipedia article based on the text included. It's currently in a "beta" stage where we're just checking to see how many people are interested in a game like this. We have a fully functional (embeddable) game here:
RankManiac 2011 - Wikimaniac
If you're using Google Chrome, you can allow desktop notifications instead of in-browser notifications (click 'First Time Playing?' and then click 'Notifications' to request permissions). In all browsers, you can click 'Start Game' which will execute a script call to fetch a random article from Wikipedia (using the API to fetch a random page) and then parse the article page to determine if:
- it's long enough to constitute an actual article
- it isn't a "disambiguation" page
And then present the results in the text box below. There's a look up feature which allows you to start typing in the beginning of the article and it searches Wikipedia for auto-complete suggestions. Currently, we have made it as easy as possible by not filtering out the article title within the content itself (although some articles are like this and get a little hard). We will make it harder later...
We wanted to know your opinion on this kind of game, perhaps suggestions for improvements, or comments.... Thanks!
